Top Democratic Leaders Rally Grassroots Volunteers at Regional GOTV Summits Throughout the State

Democratic National Committee Chair and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Rep. Joe Kennedy III, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra, and Rep. Barney Frank Address Hundreds of Markey Grassroots Volunteers Over the Weekend

Charlestown, Massachusetts – With less than three weeks to go before the special election on June 25, top Democratic leaders showed their support for Rep. Ed Markey by energizing grassroots volunteers at several GOTV summit throughout the weekend. Hundreds of Markey campaign volunteers and supporters came out to hear Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus Xavier Becerra, Democratic National Committee Chair and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Governor Michael Dukakis, Congressman Barney Frank and Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh. During the GOTV summits, volunteers participated in break out sessions and trainings where they learned strategies to get out the vote for Ed on election day.

On Friday, Rep. Becerra toured the East Boston Health Center with Ed before heading to meet and greet Markey supporters at Hacienda Don Juan in Worcester and Medina’s Supermarket in Springfield. There, Rep. Becerra shared his support for Ed’s work advocating for the issues like gun control, Social Security and tax fairness that Massachusetts voters care about.

“Massachusetts voters have a chance to send to the US Senate an experienced legislator who has fought so hard for the issues that all of us believe in,” said Becerra. “Ed Markey will fight to move our country forward by putting forward commonsense solutions to help working families thrive and reduce gun violence while protecting a woman’s right to choose. Ed Markey lives what he says, and sometimes there aren’t too many politicians that walk the walk.  He does.”

On Saturday and Sunday, DNC Chair and Rep. Wasserman Schultz attended regional GOTV summits in Somerville, Springfield and Waltham. More than one hundred Markey grassroots volunteers greeted Rep. Wasserman Schultz as she voiced her strong support for Ed’s commitment to moving President Obama’s agenda forward.

“Ed is a great guy, a fighter, and his values are the values of the Democratic Party and working families in Massachusetts,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.  “He’s been a strong voice on so many issues and a trusted leader in the House, and the President needs him in the Senate working with him to get things done.”

On Sunday, Rep. Kennedy joined Mayor William Flanagan at the GOTV summit in Fall River where they explained why electing Markey to the U.S. Senate was vital for South Coast residents.

“Ed Markey has a proven record of putting Massachusetts first. Along with being a national leader on everything from gun violence to the environment, he is the only candidate in this race who understand the unique economic conditions affecting families across the South Coast and the 4th District,” said Rep. Kennedy. “Over the next two weeks we need to do everything we can to get out the vote for Ed Markey and ensure he can keep fighting for us in the U.S. Senate.”

In Taunton, Rep. Frank and State Senator Marc Pacheco joined more than 70 grassroots volunteers to help kick-off their regional GOTV Summit. Rep. Frank highlighted the importance of electing a U.S. Senator who will stand up to national Republicans.
