Medford, MA – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) completed another successful grassroots campaign weekend on Sunday.  Despite some inclement weather, local activists, supporters and elected leaders greeted Ed to show their support for his candidacy. Standing room-only crowds at stops in Belmont, Allston/Brighton, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain applauded Ed as he pledged to stand up for Massachusetts’s families and promised to fight for action on gun control and climate change.

Hundreds more signatures were collected at today’s events by volunteers for putting Ed on the ballot. Ed’s campaign held more than one hundred signature gathering events throughout the state over the weekend.

Ed also received support this weekend from another prominent union. AFSCME Council 93 endorsed Ed this Saturday in the race for U.S. Senate. AFSCME represents 35,000 state, county and municipal employees throughout the Commonwealth. The AFSCME endorsement comes after the recent endorsement of the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association (MTA), the largest union in the state with 107,000 members.

“AFSCME is proud to place our strong support behind Congressman Ed Markey. When it comes to fighting for the middle class and securing adequate federal funding for the essential public services that Massachusetts needs and we provide, we know we can always count on Ed Markey,” said AFSCME Council 93 President, Charles C. Owen, Jr., in a statement. “He is an outspoken and highly respected leader in Congress who works to build consensus but refuse to yield to the ongoing pressure to balance our budget problems on the backs of public employees and the middle-class. Now more than ever, we need leaders like Congressman Markey in the United States Senate.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of AFSCME and its members, whose voices are so important to the Commonwealth,” said Markey. “I am encouraged by the overwhelming support I am receiving, and I will continue to meet with all of the groups and individuals throughout Massachusetts who believe in my record of standing up for middle class families and fighting for progressive values.”
