Medford, MA – Today, Reps. Ed Markey (D-Malden) and Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) signed the People’s Pledge, committing to keep outside group-funded ads out of the Massachusetts Senate campaign. The Democratic congressmen challenged any GOP candidates to do the same. The 2012 Senate campaign was able to avoid the effects of outside negative advertising when both candidates agreed to an enforceable plan.
The agreement signed by Markey and Lynch expands the pledge from the 2012 Massachusetts Senate campaign to also include direct mail in addition to broadcast advertising.
“Outside money has no place in the Massachusetts Senate race,” said Markey. “This election should be focused on issues, not outside-group attack ads. I urge all candidates in this race to join us in committing to the people’s pledge and say no to the outside special interests who want to influence this election.”
In kicking-off his campaign at the Malden YMCA earlier this month, Markey reiterated his longtime commitment to comprehensive campaign finance reform stating, “We need a Constitutional amendment to repeal the Citizens United decision that has poisoned American politics.”
“Outside interest groups have no place in Massachusetts elections,” said Lynch. “This race should be decided in debates and on the stump, not by third party advertisements or special interest mailers. I urge the Republican, Libertarian, unenrolled, and any other candidates to join us in this pledge.”
