Malden, MA – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) launched his campaign for U.S. Senate today from his hometown YMCA in Malden. Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, Ed spoke about the need to continue to move President Obama’s agenda forward, including banning assault weapons, addressing climate change, and standing up to the special interests.

“What unites us here in Malden and across Massachusetts is the unshakeable belief that no matter where you come from, no matter your circumstances, you can achieve the American Dream,” said Markey. “I am running for U.S. Senate to put the American Dream within reach for all residents of Massachusetts”

Joining Ed at the kickoff was Malden Mayor Gary Christenson and environmental health advocate Anne Anderson.

“Malden loves Ed Markey because Ed Markey loves Malden – and the message I want to give to the rest of the state is that you are going to love Ed Markey, too,” said Mayor Christenson.

The packed house of more than 600 local supporters stood in support of Ed Markey and his call to fight for middle class families and run a campaign focused on the issues that mater most to the voters of the Commonwealth.

Anne Anderson’s fight to clean up the legacy of industrial pollution linked to high incidences of leukemias in the town of Woburn in Ed’s district inspired him to become the Congressional champion of the Superfund law. This law established the principle that polluters must pay for cleaning up any contamination they caused.

“Supporting our work and standing up to corporate polluters was very unpopular politically, but Ed did not care. It is this commitment to doing what is right that will make him an unstoppable force in the Senate,” said Anderson.

Following his launch at the Malden YMCA, Ed’s kickoff tour hit the road for stops later today at diners in Worchester and Springfield.

Ed’s lick-off tour will continue tomorrow in New Bedford and Dorcester.
