It’s time to stem the tide of climate change
Climate deniers in Congress want to muddy the political debate in Washington, but the science is crystal clear: Our planet is getting warmer. And humans are to blame.
Yet Republicans in Congress continue to enable the biggest polluters out there — Big Oil and Dirty Coal — through massive tax subsidies and corporate loopholes.
Climate change is real, and it is an urgent threat. Temperatures are rising. Sea-levels are rising. The damage from superstorms like Hurricane Sandy will only get worse.
Today is the 45th annual Earth Day. It’s day when we take time to acknowledge all the work we’ve done to leave the planet in a better condition than we inherited it, and also remember that stemming the tide of climate change remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time.
Failure to act threatens our national security, our economy, and our public health. But the silver lining in all of this is that there is reason to be optimistic.
In Washington, President Obama signed a historic deal with China to lower both countries’ emission drastically in the coming years. And he’s put forth a detailed plan to get the job done.
Across the country, polls show most Americans believe in climate change. And our clean energy economy is booming. It’s growing at at a rate four times faster than others.
Global warming is an urgent threat, but I am hopeful that if we continue moving forward, we can keep our planet healthy for future generations.
