MassLive: Sen. Ed Markey among legislators leading fight to prevent telecommunications companies from blocking creation of community broadband networks
WASHINGTON — As the battle between telecommunication companies and progressive communities looking to develop municipal broadband Internet networks continues, a group of lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate are working to ensure no laws restrict the abilities of cities and towns to pursue such endeavors.
In a letter sent to the Federal Communications Commission this week, legislators including U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., asked the FCC to take action to ensure that as more communities decide to develop community broadband networks, their right to do so is protected.
