The Republican — U.S. Rep. Ed Markey lands new union endorsements in Massachusetts Senate race
Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey of Malden has landed the support of two powerful education unions in his bid to replace Secretary of State John Kerry in the U.S. Senate.
The Massachusetts Teachers Association and the National Education Association announced on Wednesday that they will throw their money and numbers behind Markey as he aims to win the Democratic Party’s nod over U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch of South Boston to go on and compete with whichever Republican clears the primary on April 30.
“Congressman Markey has been a strong and effective advocate for public education and the rights of working men and women,” said Paul Toner, president of the MTA which represents 110,000 members in the Bay State. “He knows how to get things done. He is intelligent, hard-working and principled. If Ed Markey is elected, we are confident he will fight as hard for students and public education in the U.S. Senate as he has done in the House.”
